The Doll
07.25.01 Release / TECI-1021 / 2,900Yen / 11+Secret Track

This is one kick-arse debut album from Youjeen. She seems to be in her own element here compared to her 2nd album BEWITCH and her sound in Cherry Filter. She is loud, angry, and screaming...just the way we like it.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS : 10/10
Youjeen’s
first Japanese album is simply rocking. Right from the first song, Youjeen brings you into her world by bombarding you with hypnotic guitars and her powerful voice.

There are 11 tracks on this album plus one “secret” track. Overall, there are many powerful songs on The Doll which more than make the price of the album worth it. I tend not to like slower songs that much with rock artists, but Youjeen’s slower songs on this album are just as powerful in their own right to the faster ones (which is strange, but she pulls it off well).

HOOK FACTOR : 10/10
The "Hook Factor" is basically how many songs on the album that make me want to rock out and start head banging.  There are many songs in this album that are amazing when listened to loud - Apple for your thoughts, HEY JERKS, HAPPY HAPPY DOLL, and especially HIGHER and Imitation...you which has a part 3/4 the way through that has Youjeen screaming in the background like she is getting tortured, while singing lyrics on top of that...QUITE powerful.

CD Artwork/Packaging : 9/10
7 nicely done photos are on the booklet (including the cover and back of the book) with lyrics inside for every song.

VOCALS : 10/10
If you didn’t know by now, Youjeen has an amazing voice. She can not only speak Japanese, but Korean and English perfectly.  As I said in the Hook Factor above, her voice is VERY powerful - even more powerful than AYA’s voice which we also feature.  The Doll is the prime example of what Youjeen is capable of vocal wise, and when you listen to the album, it will be apparent from the very first track.

Some of the tracks on The Doll are in English - and I’m glad that she mixes it up a little and knows English good enough to actually make deep, emotional English lyrics. She really has a harsh hatred in this album against “the man” and really expresses in detail her feelings in the English tracks well.

MIXING : 10/10
The mixing of the album sounds perfect to me - nothing too loud or too soft in this one, and Youjeen’s voice stands out nicely.
